About the Item

A refined pastel on paper depicting the portrait of a young woman wearing a white veil, executed in a spirit of Symbolist gentleness and Oriental inspiration. The face, bathed in a soft, diffuse light, is treated with great subtlety of modeling and a keen sense of transparency, reminiscent of the works of Edmond Aman-Jean (1858–1936) and his artistic circle. The anonymous artist who created this composition shares the same pictorial sensibility: a taste for vaporous effects, powdery complexions, and a melancholic poetry in the representation of the feminine. Aman-Jean's influence is evident in the way the contours are blended and the pastel tones blend into a delicate harmony of whites, greens, and pinks. This work reflects the dialogue between Symbolism and poetic Orientalism that marked the first decades of the 20th century in France, a period when the veil, light, and the downcast gaze became symbols of interiority and mystery. Presented in a gilded frame decorated with pearls and acanthus, it offers a soft and timeless presence. Dimensions: 24.5 × 19.5 cm visible – 29.5 × 24.5 cm with the frame (approx. 9.6 × 7.7 in visible – 11.6 × 9.6 in framed) A work of great delicacy, in the refined and contemplative spirit of Edmond Aman-Jean's female portraits. Ideal for collectors of French Symbolism, lovers of 1900s art, or enthusiasts of poetic Orientalism.
