A large vintage Randolph Turpin carpet.
A wonderful impressive carpet made for the British boxer Randolph Turpin (nick named 'The Leamington Licker'). The carpet measuring nearly 3 meters by 4 meters was made by a life long friend, Mr Dennis Quayle, and would make a remarkable wall hanging. Quayle owned a high quality furniture store in Birmingham and supplied amongst other furnishings, high quality handmade carpets. Following Turpin’s triumph over Sugar Ray Robinson to win the world title in 1951, Mr Quayle had the carpet made as a gift for Turpin. Later in Turpin’s life when in trouble, Quayle bought back the carpet in order to help him financially, with the carpet remaining in the Quayle family ever since.
Randolph Turpin is one of Britain’s greatest sportsmen who plied his trade with courage, honor and skill and gave Britain one of its best nights in a boxing ring. As a 33-1 underdog Turpin humbled the greatest fighter the world had seen, Sugar Ray Robinson, at Earls Court in London to become Middleweight Champion of the World. Sugar Ray was at his peak and the fight was the culmination of the flamboyant champion’s famous tour of Europe. Unable to cope with Turpin’s long reach and unusual wide stance the American struggled to land punches and Turpin’s strength inside was too much and he took the win on points after 15 rounds. He would lose the belt in a rematch 64 days later but Turpin’s achievement is a remarkable one which crowns a distinguished boxing career, he was later inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame in 2001.

It is signed/ nuymbered 1/25, but this is the actual photograph from the exhibit, and no other image was made/printed. IT IS AN AMAZING IMAGE. * This image of Michel wearing a sheer greek key toga. He is nude underneath and although subtle, it is a nude. Michel was a high fashion male model thet Michael Roberts adored and used him for many fashion campains for Joeph's London. A rare large black and white hand printed silver gelatin photograph of Michel by the legendary fashion icon, Michael Roberts, London. This image was in the gallery show in London.The images from the show are very rare and now highly sought after and collected after Mr. Robert's death. two images were purchased from that Exhibit. MICHAEL ROBERTS:
The preferred medium of the fashion journalist Michael Roberts was Canson art paper, which he scissored freehand into crisp-cut collages, or snipped into minute dots to reassemble into mosaics, for magazine covers or book illustrations. His art, bit by bit putting it together, reflected his life in fashion. He wrote about it, commissioned unexpected others to do so, photographed for media and ads, and charmed cranky legendary lensmen into snapping for him. He could source the clothes, choose the crazy locale, stage the shoot’s story, and write a witty critique of the enterprise. He was also always the most elegant person involved, effortlessly cool.
Roberts, who has died aged 75, never bothered with a résumé, since every new role or venture seemed to just develop, but they totted up to a serious career. He was a writer on the Sunday Times in the 1970s, when new couture catwalk drama and heightened designer celebrity demanded a fashion voice that was both theatre critic and gossip columnist. As a member of the Society of Equestrian Artists (SEA) and the American Academy of Equine Art, Roy is an artist of international repute.
Roy began work as a professional artist at the age of 14 while studying in the evenings at Manchester College of Art. In the early 1960s he moved to London and worked as a freelance artist and illustrator.
He has had many exhibitions including the Royal Academy, but the turning point of his career was in 1972 when he visited a racecourse and fell in love with the ‘sport of kings’. Within three years his talents for equestrian painting were recognized and acclaimed and he became a full-time equestrian artist.
Her Majesty the Queen has a painting of Roy’s in her own collection. Other commissions from The Hong Kong Jockey Club, the Coaching Club of Great Britain and the United Racecourse Group quickly followed.

The Honorable John Maler Collier (British, 1850-1934) was an important artist who painted portraits, dramatic themes, and landscapes. Maler painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style, and was one of the most prominent portrait painters of his generation. He was educated at the Eton School and studied art in Munich and Heidelberg, as well as at the Slade School under Poynter and in Paris under Laurens. He also was encouraged by Millais and Alma-Tadema.
Presented is a large hillside and river landscape signed oil painting by Collier. Framed it measures 48" wide, 30.5" high and 3" deep. Canvas is 42" wide and 24" high. Frame has very light wear. Painting is in very fine condition.
Collier was one of the 24 founding members of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, of which he became Vice President and was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He exhibited no fewer than one hundred and thirty paintings at the Royal Academy and one hundred and sixty five at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, as well as many others in galleries throughout the country and abroad. He was the author of The Primer of Art (1882), A Manual of Oil Painting (1886) and The Art of Portrait Painting (1905).
