About the Item
Set of small expressionist paintings. They were painted in 1961 by Dutch artist Jan Mammen. They represent the 14 stations of the Cross.
Each painting is framed in brass and topped with a brass cross.
Painted on wood panel in an expressionist style.
Each piece measures 16cm in height without the cross.
The crosses are attached with 2 small screws and could be removed without damaging the paintings.
Numbered on the back of each piece. One painting also has the signature and year.
Jan Mammen (Leeuwarden, April 27, 1899 – Amsterdam, December 10, 1978) was a Dutch artist.
He was the son of house and decoration painter and teacher at a craft school Johann Mammen and Johanna Cornelia Sikkink. He was married to Bregitta Elisabeth Gerarda Schermer.
He was known as a glass painter and art painter. De Telegraaf reported on December 14, 1978, following his death, that he had been trained at the Rijksakademie of fine arts. He then worked in the studio of Joep Nicolas. He was for a long time mayor of the Sint-Agneskerk in Amsterdam-Zuid, for which he also made a church window. According to the same In memoriam, he was a teacher in his profession for more than forty years, but also provided embellishments of churches and public buildings. Dagblad Trouw reported that he was inspired by Bible stories and writings by Saint John and Theresia of Avilla.
He was a knight in the Order of St. Gregory the Great.
