17th century, Dutch oil on canvas painting with the pay of soldiers Probably Dutch painter of the 17th century Size with frame: cm H 103 x W 146 x D 6, canvas only: cm W 132 x H 88.5 The painting depicts a rather unusual subject in paintings of the kind of battles, or the time when the troops, following the conflict, go to the camp to collect pay. The main scene is described on the right: around a table covered by a large red cloth sits a man intent on writing with his feather on scroll rolls the names of those who, belonging to the troops, passes to withdraw the money due. In front of him a man is counting the coins placed on the table, along with bags of money already made. A soldier drops some coins inside a character’s hat. All around other men have noticed waiting for their turn, holding the spears and weapons with which they fought. In the foreground a boy plays with a dog and to his right, a wild man, getting off his horse, is about to take some bags of coins, perhaps to give them to the soldier who is nearby. Still to the right, on the steed, a character moves away. In the middle of the painting a soldier in armor and a feathered hat gallops with his horse towards the valley while he is stopped by a man who hands him the hat as he also asks for some coin. On the right other characters animate the composition: some rest, with their own compensation already in hand, others entertain in conversation. The whole episode is set all'aperto, on a high ground, beyond which you can see a flat landscape, with some wayfarers and, close to some gentle hills, which frame the view, stand some turreted buildings of a town. Some green plants are the backdrop to the glimpse, while a large portion of the sky is marked by fluffy pink and gray clouds that seem to suggest a late hour of the day, close to sunset. The work must be dated back to the seventeenth century, at a time when the genre of battles, and episodes immediately before or after the conflict, were much appreciated and required by both Italian and European clients. The carved and golden wooden frame is in Venetian style of the 18th century. We apologize for any translation errors from Italian.
