17th century The guardian angel Oil on canvas, 44 x 34 cm Frame, cm 50 x 40 x 3 In the Book of Tobias the angel Raphael (defined archangel only in the apocryphal texts), was invoked by Tobi, a just and poor man, to accompany his son Tobias, often called Tobias, to collect a credit of ten silver talents contracted for ten years. first. The subject was particularly in vogue in the Renaissance, especially in Florence, where the young sons of the city's bankers embarked on distant journeys to learn the family trade, therefore they were required paintings as a sort of protection for a safe return home. The story concerning the young Tobias (or Tobias) and his father, the blind Tobias (or Tobi) is not present in all editions of the Bible, as it is accepted only by Jews and Protestants. It is set in the 7th century BC. C. in Assyria, where the Israelites had been deported after the destruction of the northern kingdom of Israel. The archangel Raphael had been sent by God as a reward for the honesty of Tobi's wife, who, since her husband had gone blind, had been working spinning to support the family. Since Tobi had lent money to a distant city and wanted it back, he sent his young son Tobiolo begging him to find a companion for the journey. He found Raffaele, who did not, however, have the appearance of an angel, and set out on a journey with him and his little dog. Once on the Tigris River, Tobiolo wanted to swim; a fish, however, leapt from the water and tried to devour his foot. Urged on by Raphael, Tobiolo managed to grab the fish, threw it on the bank and took away its heart, liver and gall, which, according to the angel, would have been remedies against demons and eye diseases. The story continues with the meeting between Tobiolo and Sara, of which it was said that seven men who had married her had been killed on their wedding night by a terrible demon. Tobiolo, falling in love with her young woman, married her and managed to destroy the demon with the entrails of the fish. Returning home to his parents with his wife, Tobiolo sprinkled his father's eyes with the gall of the fish and he regained his sight.
