About the Item

17th century old master oil painting of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. Spanish school. Dramatic expression and perfect use of chiaroscuro, the art of light and shadow effects, makes this painting a masterpiece. Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, clad in a white robe, lays down his mitre and staff to render his worldly position to God. He is looking upwards to the soaring angels in the clouds. The painting is characterized by rich deep colors, intense light and dark shadows. From the later part of the 16th century, Spain was blessed with great Baroque painters like Velazquez, El Greco, Murillo and other Spanish masters of the time. It was the Golden Age of Spanish Baroque School paintings. This is a beautiful painting, rich in detail and color, expressing the mood of 17th century sacred artwork.
