About the Item
A fine early 18th century Flemish school circa 1730, oil on panel attributed to Mattheus Terwesten (a partial signature next to the pedestal) set into its gold leaf gilt carved wood.
Our painting shows an allegory of wealth : a goddess holds a cornucopia in which putti serve themselves under Bacchus' eyes, goddess Diana walks with her Muses in the background.
Mattheus (or Matthäus) Terwesten was a Dutch painter and art educator. He is known for his portraits as well as of mythological and allegorical subjects. He became court painter to Frederick William I of Prussia and professor at the Prussian Academy of Arts.
Perfect piece to complete a neoclassical decoration in a sitting room, with an authentic early 18th century piece by a great Dutch master.
