About the Item

18th century English or Continental old master portrait of a gentleman wearing a red robe with a black fur collar, holding a stick in his right hand. The stick might be the attribute of an architect, scholar, or even musician. Appears to have been relined at some point. A disarming portrait due to the direct and sympathetic gaze of the sitter, making it feel like he is still here with us. Quite handsome. Old paper label partially intact: J.C E. D'Esteres with other writing. 30 inches high 25 wide
