About the Item
This colorful and gleeful genre painting is from France, circa 1770. Genre paintings depict people engaged in common activities, such as picnicking, strolling through a park, or romantic settings. In the 17th and 18th centuries, paintings of this style typically came from France, The Netherlands, and Belgium. This particular painting can be considered to be after Nicolas Lancret, the French painter whose works are currently displayed in the British Museum and the National Gallery in London, among others.
The shaped canvas has been attached to a wooden stretcher via old nail heads. Utilizing shades of green, blue, and white as major colors, the artist has depicted a joyous scene of young aristocrats spending an afternoon in a forest clearing. A man in blue pants with a yellow striped shirt with ruffled sleeves is sitting on a rock strumming a lute. He is wearing a red toque (a brimless hat) and looking towards his left at a young girl in a brown dress sitting in the grass. The girl is holding a long-stemmed flower while a small dog stands beside her.
A woman in a white and brown dress with a flower in her hair sits beside the musician on the rock. She is also looking at the young girl, as is a third female sitting directly in front of the musician. This young woman has on a vibrant blue and red dress with a flowing blue ribbon in her hair. Trees and greenery surround the group and a large hill or mountain can be seen in the distance beneath the blue sky.
The 18th century painting was either once an inset over door panel that would have been hung above an entryway or the upper section of a Trumeau mirror. Today, this painted canvas, with its gently curving contour and vibrant colors, can be hung and appreciated as is.

Large 18th Century Dutch Oil on Canvas Painting of a Southern Landscape, 56x67
Located in Dallas, TX
Measuring 56 H x 67 W, this large Dutch oil on canvas painting from the 1700s depicts a Southern landscape of a glen beneath a rocky cliff. The expansive valley stretches far into the distance, before terminating at a lake in front of a mountain. Numerous flocks of sheep can be seen throughout the basin, including a group high up on the towering cliff with green trees dotting the sand-colored rock. Most of the flocks in the distance are being tended to by shepherds, but interestingly, a group of four men has gathered in the foreground to engage in leisurely activities as their sheep, cows, goat, and dog await nearby. A few chateaus can be seen in the distance, but most of the architecture is in the style of a capriccio, in that they are dilapidated. The top of a stone obelisk is missing and there are some losses to the inscribed pedestal next to it that supports a lidded urn. Large pieces of broken rock are scattered about, with one slab being used as a seat/table for two shepherds playing cards. Several birds fly in the blue sky, with the setting sun giving the clouds hues of gray, orange, and pink. The peaceful scene is surrounded by a brown wood frame with a thin undulating gilt border that edges the canvas.

Antique Oil on Canvas Painting, Interior of an Inn with Dancing Peasants, 18th C
By David Teniers the Younger
Located in Dallas, TX
After the original 17th-century by the famed Flemish painter, David Teniers II (usually referred to as “David Teniers the Younger”, as his father David Teniers the Elder was also an accomplished painter), this fabulous painting depicts a vibrant scene, both in color and theme. Our version, which was painted in the 1700s, is by an unknown, but very talented artist. The painting is surrounded by a giltwood frame with two layers of beading.
Both Teniers were known for developing the “peasant genre” or “tavern scene”, where members of the working class were shown actively celebrating life. The earthy tones of the interior of the inn (brown and beige) are offset by citizens in brightly colored attire consisting of green, red, black, and gray. The scene is divided into two rooms, with seven patrons (mostly men) gathered around a barrel table in front of a very large fireplace. Two of the men are playing cards and there are two tankards visible. The calmness of this group is a drastic difference from the 11 people gathered in the foreground. A man in blue stands on top of a wine barrel table...

18th Century Oil on Canvas French Rococo Gallant Genre Scene Painting, 1750
Located in Vicoforte, Piedmont
A refined 18th-century French painting. This artwork oil on canvas depicts a romantic party, a typical genre scene of the Rococo period, set in an aristocratic garden in Arcadian style. Elegantly attired young ladies and gentlemen are captured in a moment of conversation and leisure. The composition unfolds with a theatrical, circular flow, perfectly calibrated to the oval format, with an exquisite balance between the figures in the foreground and the trees in the background.
The visual fulcrum is the central group, where a young woman in a white dress listens to a love poem from her suitor. The landscape is rendered in deep greens and nuanced blues, creating a suspended and slightly melancholic atmosphere, evidently inspired by the painting of Antoine Watteau. The light is diffuse, free of strong contrasts, and envelops the figures with an almost silky effect. The draperies are soft, rendered with fluid, light brushstrokes, and pastel colors dominate the composition. This artwork, of remarkable pictorial quality, can be attributed to the circle of Jean Baptiste Pater...
