Ancient painting of 1700 Portrait of a noblewoman - OIL ON CANVAS Attribution to Francoise de Troi Expertise Arabella Cifani Jean François de Troy (January 27, 1679, Paris - January 26, 1752, Rome) was a French Rococo easel and fresco painter, designer and tapestry designer. One of the greatest painters of French history in his time, he was equally successful with his decorative paintings, genre scenes and portraits. He was the inventor of the tableaux de mode ("fashion paintings"), which sought to provide a lively representation of contemporary fashions, pastimes and manners. He was a scion of a family of painters. His father was the portraitist François de Troy (1645–1730). His father was his first teacher. After failing to win the Prix de Rome, he went to his father's expense in Italy from 1699 to 1706. He remained initially in Rome, where he was assigned a room at the French Academy. He also visited the cities of northern Italy. At the same time he was aggregated and admitted to the Académie Royale de peinture et de sculpture in July 1708, presumably based on his composition Niobe and her Children (Musée Fabre) but certainly not without a little help from his father who was then the director of that institution. He took charge of the Palace of Versailles and the palace of Fontainebleau between 1724 and 1737. In 1738 he left France for Rome after his appointment as director of the French Academy in Rome. He resided for the rest of his life in Rome. He was also elected an honorary member of the Roman Academy of San Luca, and subsequently briefly appointed his director in 1744. De Troy was ennobled twice in his life, the first time he bought the office of the secretary of the ROI ("secretary to the king") and a second time on the occasion of the Order of the Saint Michel prize. According to contemporary reports, he lived a luxurious lifestyle in Rome and entertained the guests of the superior social circles of Rome. De Troy has encountered a tragedy in his personal life: his wife died at a young age and all his seven children died. Jean François de Troy died on January 26, 1752 in Rome. ARABELLA CIFANI Arabella Cifani has been involved for over thirty years with intense activity in the fields of criticism and art history at national and international level. Graduated in art history in Turin, she also studied painting, set design and social communications. Together with Franco Monetti, in numerous volumes and essays in Italian, English, French and Hungarian, he offered important documentary and historical-artistic discoveries on international art subjects and participated with innovative studies in major exhibitions at the Louvre, the National Gallery and of the Royal Academy of London, of Palazzo Venezia in Rome and collaborated in publications of the Treccani Encyclopedia and of the Sapienza University of Rome. The two scholars have to their credit some forty books printed at prestigious foreign and Italian publishers and over two hundred and fifty essays published by the most important art magazines of the world. Among the publications, we point out the monograph of the famous mosaicist Giovanni Battista Calandra (1586-1644), sponsored by the Reverenda Fabbrica di San Pietro on the occasion of the five hundred years of the Vatican Basilica; the volume on Palazzo Lascaris in Turin (Allemandi editore), commissioned by the Regional Council of Piedmont in 2008; the one dedicated to the historic building of the Industrial Union of Turin (2012). She was appointed by the President of the Republic, in 2008, Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Since 2015 he has been editor of the editorial staff of the "Giornale dell'Arte" book sector.
