18th Century Italian Capriccio of Roman Ruins Attributed to Luigi Vanvitelli

About the Item

An unsigned 18th century oil painting on canvas of classical ancient Roman ruins, called Capriccio, attributed to Luigi Vanvitelli ( born May 12, 1700, Naples died March 1, 1773, Caserta ). The painting was attributed to Vanvitelli by the noted scholar, professor G. Fiocco of Venice in December, 1964. Professor Fiocco was a leading expert on 14th-18th century Italian art who has sadly passed and could not be contacted for confirmation. A short handwritten note dated 16 December 1964 by the noted scholar attesting to the attribution is included in the photo gallery shown for the painting. The large 'Capriccio' depicts an everyday scene in the middle of the Roman forum in the 18 Century in Rome characterized by a number of figures attending to their daily routines of attending , feeding and taking care of thierv livestock in amongst classocal Roman ruins. The Roman monuments are shown in disrepair with weeds and other vegetation growing around and on top of them. An outcrop of buildings, possibly part of a monastery is shown in the background against a blue sky with fleeting sunset or sunrise clouds. The painting is presented in a carved wood and gilded period frame which has been recently restored. Luigi Vanvitelli whose real name was actually Gaspar Van Wittel was the son of a Dutch painter of land and cityscapes (veduta), Initially he followed in his father's footsteps as a painter of veduta for the Grand Tour trade . He was heavily patronized by one of Rome and Italy's leading dynastic families the Colonnas. Such was the Colonnas admiration for Vanvitelli that they amassed over 100 of his paintings consisting mostly of landscapes and which are preserved and displayed in their own red painted Sala in the Colonna Gallery in Rome. Despite his success as an artisthowever, Luigi Vanvitell's renown and calling, was architecture. He was trained in Rome by the architect Nicola Salvi, with whom he worked on construction of the Trevi Fountain. Following his notable successes in the competitions for the facade of the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano (1732) and the facade of Palazzo Poli behind the Trevi Fountain. At Ancona in 1732, he devised the vast Lazzaretto, a pentagonal building covering more than 20,000 square meters, built to protect the military defensive authorities from the risk of contagious diseases potentially reaching the town with the ships. Vanvitelli also oversaw the stabilization of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica when it developed cracks and found time to paint frescos in a chapel at San Cecilia in Trastevere. Vanvitelli's technical and engineering capabilities, together with his sense of scenographic drama led Charles VII of Naples to commission the great Palace of Caserta, intended as a fresh start for administering the ungovernable Kingdom of Naples. Vanvitelli worked on the project for the rest of his life, for Charles and for his successor Ferdinand IV. In Naples he designed the city's royal palace (1753) and some aristocratic palaces and churches. His engineering talents were exercised as well: for Caserta he devised the great aqueduct system that brought water to run the cascades and fountains.
