About the Item

Italian Baroque religious panel painting. Style of Giovan Battista Langetti, depicting St. Jerome, the revered early Christian scholar best known for translating the Bible into Latin. Shown as an aged ascetic with flowing beard, Jerome leans over an open manuscript, absorbed in study. St. Jerome was considered a translator, theologian, and hermit. This work is painted on a shaped wooden panel with its original gilt border. At the lower cartouche, the Latin phrase "Remissionem Peccatorum" ("Remission of Sins") is inscribed, reinforcing the painting's religious narrative and likely indicating its original use within a church, chapel, or private devotional setting. In today's interiors, this piece brings character, history and sculptural presence into modern interiors. It is ideal for adding Old-World gravitas to a library, study, or office. Painting can create a focal point, can be paired with contemporary art for a striking contrast, or can enhance a hallway or niche with a soulful, centuries-old object.
