About the Item
A refined 18th-century French painting. This artwork oil on canvas depicts a romantic party, a typical genre scene of the Rococo period, set in an aristocratic garden in Arcadian style. Elegantly attired young ladies and gentlemen are captured in a moment of conversation and leisure. The composition unfolds with a theatrical, circular flow, perfectly calibrated to the oval format, with an exquisite balance between the figures in the foreground and the trees in the background.
The visual fulcrum is the central group, where a young woman in a white dress listens to a love poem from her suitor. The landscape is rendered in deep greens and nuanced blues, creating a suspended and slightly melancholic atmosphere, evidently inspired by the painting of Antoine Watteau. The light is diffuse, free of strong contrasts, and envelops the figures with an almost silky effect. The draperies are soft, rendered with fluid, light brushstrokes, and pastel colors dominate the composition. This artwork, of remarkable pictorial quality, can be attributed to the circle of Jean Baptiste Pater or Nicolas Lancret, both direct heirs of Antoine Watteau. A painting of great charm and decoration, ideal for prestigious classical or contemporary settings.
Scenographic 20th-century frame in finely carved and gilded wood, perfectly in keeping with the Rococo style. The painting has undergone restoration with the canvas mounted on a panel and retouching of the color in small spots. It presents some surface irregularities with slight lifting of the canvas from the wooden support (see photo), but is overall in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 89 x W 71 cm.
