About the Item
18th Century Portrait Miniature of a Child, in the style of Christian Friedrich Zincke, half length, her hair adorned with flowers and wearing a blue dress with a yellow cape enamel on copper. Oval 6cm. In a pressed gilt metal frame. circa 1750.
Christian Friedrich Zincke (c.1683–1767), a German-born artist renowned for his enamel portrait miniatures, primarily worked in England after settling there around 1706.
Zincke was born in Dresden, Germany, where he trained under his goldsmith father and studied painting with Heinrich Christoph Fehling. In 1706, he moved to England at the invitation of Swedish enameller Charles Boit to work on a large enamel project. After Boit left for France in 1714, Zincke remained in London, building a successful career as a miniaturist with royal patronage, including appointments to George II and Frederick, Prince of Wales. His work, primarily enamel portraits on copper, was highly sought after in Britain, particularly from the 1720s to the 1740s, until his eyesight began to fail
