About the Item

This charming antique oil on board was painted in France circa 1830 and remains presented in its original giltwood frame. The intimate composition depicts a humble peasant mother serving a simple meal to her two children, portrayed just after saying grace in the manner of Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (1699-1779). Rendered with warm earth tones and a gentle, contemplative atmosphere, the scene reflects the quiet dignity and serenity of rural domestic life during the period. Beautifully composed, the triangular arrangement of the three figures provides visual stability and calm, while soft, diffused lighting highlights the mother’s tender gesture and the children’s attentive postures. The austere interior, a plain table covered with linen, modest ladder-back chairs, and simple earthenware, contributes to the tranquil, almost devotional character of the scene. The painting draws inspiration from Chardin’s celebrated “Le Bénédicité,” a subject he revisited several times, one version having been presented to Louis XV in 1740.
