About the Item

Capture the pastoral charm of 19th-century France with this serene oil on canvas by Charles H. Clair (French, 1860–1930). Known for his bucolic landscapes and tender depictions of animals, Clair masterfully renders a tranquil rural scene featuring a shepherd guiding a flock of sheep down a muddy country path bordered by autumnal trees. The soft diffused light, delicate palette, and fluid brushwork reflect the artist’s romantic naturalism and his deep affection for the French countryside. Signed “Ch. Clair” in the lower left corner. Set in its original carved and gilded period frame richly decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves and floral motifs, the composition gains an added sense of warmth and depth. The back of the frame bears the label of A. Vesac, a 19th-century Parisian gilder and frame maker located at 26 Rue des Sergents, Amiens. The painting is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, displaying harmonious tones and fine preservation of surface. Charles H. Clair (1860–1930) was a French painter and engraver celebrated for his pastoral scenes of sheep, cows, and rural life. He regularly exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, becoming a member in 1913, and is listed in Benezit with an extensive entry and recorded auction results. A timeless piece that evokes rustic serenity, ideal for a library, hallway, or above a mantel. Measures: 28.5" W x 25" H.
