About the Item

Bring pastoral charm to any interior with this bucolic, antique oil on canvas painting. Created in France circa 1860 and set in its original carved giltwood frame, the artwork depicts a peaceful countryside scene with two peasant women conversing near a thatched cottage, surrounded by blooming fruit trees, chickens, and ducks by a pond. The composition is beautifully rendered with soft, luminous tones and a delicate sense of atmosphere reminiscent of the Barbizon tradition. The painting is signed in the lower left corner by the artist A. Degerville. While little is recorded about Degerville, his work reflects the refined touch and romantic sensibility characteristic of 19th-century French genre painters who celebrated rural life and the harmony of man and nature. The canvas is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and the gilt frame shows gentle wear consistent with its period. Measures: 30″ W × 23.5″ H.
