About the Item

Decorate a study, living room, or library with this elegant and atmospheric antique oil on canvas painting. Created in France circa 1890 and set in a richly carved giltwood frame, the artwork captures a serene rural street scene rendered in a soft post-Impressionist style. Signed in the lower left corner E. Lefevre, one of the rare pseudonyms used by the celebrated artist Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941), the composition depicts a tranquil village road lined with cottages, where a lone peasant woman walks toward the distance beneath a golden horizon. The hazy light and subtle tonal shifts evoke the quiet poetry of provincial life that Galien-Laloue portrayed throughout his career. The 19th-century painting, which has been relined and reinforced with a wooden support panel, is in excellent condition with rich, realistic color and finely modulated light. The work demonstrates the artist’s expert handling of atmosphere and spatial depth—hallmarks that define his most desirable canvases. The verso is inscribed “E. Galien Laloue (1854-1941) E. Lefevre,” and the piece has been authenticated by French art expert Noé Willer, who confirms its inclusion in his archives of the artist. Listed in Benezit (see reference image). About the Artist: Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941) was a French painter renowned for his charming Parisian and rural landscapes. His atmospheric scenes of la Belle Époque—bustling boulevards, market squares, and countryside villages—capture the vitality of late-19th-century France. A prolific artist, Galien-Laloue often painted under pseudonyms including J. Lievin, E. Galiany, L. Dupuy, and E. Lefevre, among others, as he worked under exclusive contract with a single gallery. His works are held in numerous French museums including the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Louviers, La Rochelle, and Mulhouse. Galien-Laloue remains highly sought after for his lyrical depictions of light, atmosphere, and the rhythms of everyday life. Condition: Excellent commensurate with age and use; relined and mounted for stability. Measures: 31.5” W x 27.75” H.

19th Century Framed Farmyard Oil Painting Signed Kermanguy for E. Galien-Laloue
By Eugene Galien-Laloue
Located in Dallas, TX
Decorate a study, living room or den with this beautiful and colorful antique painting! Painted in France circa 1890, the artwork on canvas is set in a 19th century carved gilt wood frame and illustrates a picturesque, countryside scene in rural France depicting a farmyard at the edge of a village; the painting is signed in the lower right corner by the artist, E. Kermanguy, one of the pseudonyms of Eugene Galien-Laloue (1854-1941). The pastoral painting, which has been relined, is in excellent condition with rich, realistic colors in a post impressionist style; throughout the painting, the viewer can get a sense of the artist's expertise in the rendering of space, light and a beautifully hazy atmosphere. We thank Mr. Noé Willer for confirming the authenticity of this work, which appears in his archives of the artist. Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941) was a French artist of French-Italian parents. He was a popularizer of landscapes, marine and street scenes, usually those illustrating autumn or winter settings. His paintings of the early 1900s accurately represent the era in which he lived: a happy, bustling Paris during la Belle Époque. His paintings regularly include horse-drawn carriages, trolley cars and its first omnibuses. Galien-Laloue's works are valued not only for their contribution to 20th century art, but for the actual historical content which they document. His work can be seen at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Louvier, Musée des Beaux-Arts, La Rochelle, Mulhouse, France. Some artists or writers are content to have a pseudonym so as to disguise their work. Eugène Galien Laloue was particularly adept at establishing many identities, since over the course of his career he worked under three main pseudonyms: J. Lievin – after a soldier he met during the Franco-Prussian war, E. Galiany – an Italianized version of his own names, and L. Dupuy – after Dupuy Léon who lived in his same area. Even his name “Galien” is questionable, since on occasion he spelled it with one “l” and on his birth...
