About the Item

A moving devotional work in the manner of 17th-century Italian Baroque painting, this 19th-century oil on canvas was created in Italy circa 1870 and depicts the Holy Family with the young Saint John the Baptist. The Virgin Mary tenderly holds the Christ Child, who reaches toward Saint John, while Saint Joseph looks on from behind in quiet reverence. The composition is imbued with warmth, intimacy, and spiritual symbolism, including the reed cross held by Saint John, which alludes to the Passion. Rendered with soft chiaroscuro and glowing skin tones, the scene reflects the influence of artists like Sassoferrato and Murillo. The canvas has been professionally relined and shows minor craquelure consistent with age. Housed in an ornate carved and giltwood frame with foliate corner details, the painting measures 39.5 inches high by 29.5 inches wide. Excellent condition commensurate with age and use. An elegant and contemplative addition to a traditional interior.

Great Italian painting from the second half of the 16th century. Oil on canvas painting depicting a Holy Family from the Tuscan school of remarkable pictorial quality. We find the typical stylistic features of the Renaissance with a wonderful pyramidal composition, a refined chromatic palette and particular attention to the drapery. In the center is the Madonna with the baby Jesus in her arms who reaches out toward Saint John the Baptist with a lamb at his side, a symbol of Christ's sacrifice.
