About the Item

Decorate a library, study, or formal living room with this exceptional 19th-century Italian devotional painting. Created in Italy circa 1850, this large hand-painted oil on canvas is set in its original carved and giltwood frame. Titled Madonna of the Harpies, the work is a faithful 19th-century interpretation of Andrea del Sarto’s celebrated Renaissance altarpiece now housed in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, flanked by Saint John the Evangelist and either Saint Francis or Saint Bonaventure. Two cherubs support the base of the pedestal beneath the Virgin, which is adorned with sculpted harpies, mythological figures symbolizing evil vanquished underfoot. This “sacra conversazione” (holy conversation) exemplifies the dynamism and grace of High Renaissance painting, balancing classical structure with emotional depth. The artist’s handling of color, light, and expression reflects both reverence and technical mastery, particularly in the soft modeling of the Virgin’s face and the fluid drapery rendered in deep coral, blue, and gold tones. The original composition by Andrea del Sarto (1486–1530) was commissioned in 1515 for the convent of San Francesco dei Macci and completed in 1517, as indicated by the Latin inscription carved into the pedestal: “AD SUMMUM REGNATOREM DEFER TUR IN ALTUM MDXVII.” The Florentine master’s work was praised by Vasari and remains one of the defining achievements of the High Renaissance in Italy. This 19th-century painting, inspired by del Sarto’s masterpiece, captures both the solemn grandeur and human tenderness of the original. It remains in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, displaying rich coloration, fine brushwork, and a beautifully preserved gilded frame with leaf and beaded ornamentation.
