About the Item

A very fine painting of a show horse with a cropped tail and proud stance in a carefully detailed stable setting. The navy blanket is monogrammed personally "T.K. A.P.” and the edges highlighted in red, resting over a wall mounted water trough. The floor is layered in fresh and brilliantly depicted hay with a complex array of shadows cascading through the tidy space. It is executed in oil on canvas and we have had it beautifully cleaned and conserved; it is housed in an early gilt frame with glass protecting the canvas. The lower right corner is signed "James Clark Son, 21 Walbrook St, New North Road, N" Born Shoreditch in February of 1863, James Albert Clark was the son of animal painter James Clark and his second wife Frances Parsons. James Albert along with his brothers Samuel and Octavius studied under their father. James and James Albert began collaborating together during James Albert’s teenage years and they would generally sign these collaborations as “James Clark and Son” along with the address underneath. From 1858 through 1878, the family lived at 21 Walbrook Street in St. Leonard, Shoreditch, after which they moved in 1879 to 67 Riversdale Road, Islington. The majority of these collaborations are painted at Riversdale, the present example being a rather early work. Following in his father’s footsteps, James Albert focused the body of his work on Equestrian subjects and prize-winning animals, these often focused on cattle, dogs, and pigs. He further supplemented his income by working as a painting conservator for a local auctioneer. Measurements: 22 3/4” H x 26 7/8” W x 1 7/8” D [frame].
