About the Item

Nineteenth century Evaluation of the art expert Measures: Oil on canvas, 97 x 77 cm Frame 112 x 92 cm Signed "Morselli" The canvas depicts a young married couple intent on having an art expert assess a painting in his studio. The connoisseur is seated on a comfortable armchair and holds the painting in his hands, the subject of which is hidden from the viewer, causing a flicker of mystery to light up in the regard, while the young people are intent on explaining the subject of the painting. The room in which the work is set is completely decorated with paintings, with an encrustation setting, as was typical in the ancient aristocratic residences in which entire halls and long corridors lent themselves with their high ceilings to host the most varied artistic productions. Examples of nineteenth-century residences thus embellished can still be seen today in the collection of Palazzo Borromeo on Isola Bella and Palazzo Colonna in Rome.
