About the Item

Executed in France circa 1890, this elegant grisaille (monochrome) oil painting depicts Cardinal Richelieu in his study, reading a royal dispatch. The composition captures a moment of quiet authority: the seated Cardinal, dressed in his clerical robes and Maltese cross, studies a letter while two attendants await his command. Light filters softly through the leaded stained-glass window, illuminating the refined interior with remarkable depth and atmosphere. Signed in the upper right corner by the French artist Léon Fauret (1853–1955), the work demonstrates the painter’s academic precision and storytelling sensibility. Fauret trained under A. Dupuy at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, then studied with J.-P. Laurens, Benjamin Constant, and Gabriel Ferrier at the Académie Julian in Paris. A member of the Société des Artistes Français from 1897, Fauret received honorable mention in 1896 and is listed in Benezit. The painting is presented in its original carved giltwood frame featuring intricate acanthus and beaded ornamentation, complementing the refined 17th-century subject matter. In excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with light craquelure and a rich antique patina. A striking historical composition for any study, library, or collector of French academic paintings. Dimensions: Frame: 33.5” H × 25.5” W
