About the Item

19th century French school, architectural scene by Joseph Paul Martin (1799- after 1861). Oil on canvas signed and dated 1857. Our painting is set into a beautiful 19th century gold leaf gilt wood frame. Our painting pictures an imaginary city that grew in the painter's mind. Elements and buildings probably actually exist in different places ; they are gathered by the painter in an original composition. The artist probably meant to show 17th century or 18th century, according to the costumes the characters are wearing. Beautiful, large painting, very decorative and evocative of the eclecticism during French Second Empire. Painting in very good condition, cleaned. The canvas has been relined some time ago. Antique frame gilt with gold leaf, adapted to the dimensions of our painting : it fits the canvas perfectly. Origin : a castle near Paris, France Frame : 145cm x 113cm Canvas : 124cm x 91cm
