Apollo and Zeus, a Meeting in the Heavens.This stunning original oil on canvas mural was painted by Ernest Narjot (1826-1886). At 15.5' tall and 10' wide, this massive canvas is a rare find. This mural canvas was displayed on the ceiling of the Fine Arts Building constructed for the California Midwinter International Exposition in Golden Gate Park in 1894. Later, this structure became the famous de Young Museum of Northern California, the oldest museum in San Francisco. Condition: Age related craquelure throughout, peelings, creases, tears, small holes, re-touches, etc. Canvas will benefit from cleaning which we leave to discretion of buyer. Ernest Narjot painted in a detailed, traditional style seen in his landscapes, portraits, and several murals for public buildings. By the 1880s, he was considered one of California's foremost painters and also illustrated books of early California life. His paintings were meticulously detailed and rendered in the traditional style of the mid-19th century French School of painting. Narjot died in San Francisco on Aug. 24, 1898. His works are rare since many of his paintings were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. Note: this is one canvas of a pair but are listed/sold separately.
