Artist: Thomas Baker (British, 1809–1864) A Pastoral Landscape with Figures, Cattle and a Village Church Medium: Oil on canvas Signed and dated ‘T. Baker 1846’ lower left A finely detailed mid-19th-century pastoral landscape by renowned Birmingham School artist Thomas Baker, known as “Baker of Leamington.” The scene depicts a tranquil rural setting with cattle grazing and resting beside a gently flowing stream, accompanied by a seated figure and dog in the foreground. At the centre distance rises a village church with square tower and tracery windows, partially framed by mature trees under a dramatic sky with drifting cloud formations. Executed with Baker’s characteristic precision, the painting shows extraordinary attention to natural detail—the texture of bark, the modelling of cattle, and the crisp, sunlit architectural features are all rendered with meticulous control. The composition balances broad atmospheric effects with finely handled foreground elements, typical of Baker’s most accomplished works of the 1840s. Circa 1846 English Condition: Very good overall; stable craquelure consistent with age; colours bright and well preserved.
