About the Item

Heinrich von Zügel (1850 Murhardt-1941 Munich) “Bull” Oil on canvas mounted on painting cardboard, signed, created around 1910 Height 33 cm Width 44 cm Heinrich von Zügel painted animals with a realism and detail that few others could match. His keen eye was not only focused on the creature itself, but also appreciated its habitat and way of life. His dramatic, impressionistic interpretation of familiar fauna set new standards and continues to inspire people to this day. Heinrich von Zügel was born on October 22, 1850, the son of a sheep farmer in Murrhardt. Having already attracted attention during his school days for his remarkable talent for drawing, he received his first drawing lessons from the miniature painter Johann Michael Holder, who died in 1861. In 1869, von Zügel was allowed to attend the Stuttgart Art School, where Heinrich von Rustige and Bernhard von Neher trained him as an animal and genre painter. Two years later, Heinrich von Zügel moved to Munich, where he met the renowned animal painter Anton Braith, who became an important mentor to him. Von Zügel, however, could not relate to the views of his official teacher Carl von Piloty, which is why he eventually left the Munich Academy disappointed and disillusioned. As a self-taught artist, Heinrich von Zügel was initially heavily influenced by realism. He demonstrated a particular sensitivity in his observation of light, which he used in his paintings to create the illusion of life and movement. At the same time, animals became an increasingly important motif for the artist, and soon almost all of his compositions focused on native fauna. Heinrich von Zügel was encouraged in this direction by his friendship with the Dutch animal painter Johannes de Haas, who invited him to Holland in 1889. A year later, the two painters traveled together to the seaside resort of La Panne. Von Zügel also felt increasingly attracted to Impressionism, which he had been introduced to primarily by his friend Gotthard Kuehl. Although he was hesitant to adopt this style of painting, its influence and transformation can be clearly seen in the works from that period: more transparent colors and broader brushstrokes led to paintings in which the mood was more important than the details. Heinrich von Zügel's shift towards Impressionism brought him his breakthrough. In 1892, he participated in the founding of the Munich Secession, and less than a year later, he won a small gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. In 1895, he was appointed professor at the Munich Art Academy. Von Zügel worked on some paintings for an exceptionally long time and created numerous different versions—his famous work “Hard Work,” depicting a team of oxen plowing, took him a total of forty years to complete. Over time, von Zügel chose increasingly larger formats, depicting the eternally repeating cycle of life and often the hardships associated with it in sometimes extreme compositions. An eye disease prevented Heinrich von Zügel from pursuing his artistic activities to the fullest extent in his final years. This plunged the painter into severe depression, which accompanied him until his death. Heinrich von Zügel died on January 30, 1941, in Munich at the proud age of 90. His eldest son, Willy Zügel, had inherited his father's artistic talent and love of animals and made a name for himself as an animal sculptor.
