19thC Still life with fruits Oil on canvas, 64 x 52 cm The still life analyzed presents a mixture of floral and fruit elements arranged in a circular order on a table covered with green cloth. The left side of the canvas is occupied by an elegant vase, minutely reproduced in its sinuous decorations, within which a cascade of flowers has been carefully arranged; roses, anemones, and tulips can be recognized. Next to the base of the vase is a wicker basket inside of which have been scattered ripe figs, the skins of which have split leaving a glimpse of reddish flesh, and a large cluster of white grapes, typical fruits that mark the end of summer. On the sides of the basket are arranged some citrus fruits, on the left a lemon, on the right four oranges. In the background, a large, round watermelon has been stripped of a large slice, highlighting the juicy pinkish flesh inside. The smooth skin of the watermelon is topped by a cluster of dark grapes. The grapes are hit by a beam of light, which highlights their shapes and makes them stand out from the dark, uniform background, thus echoing the Caravaggesque lesson. The canvas features a vibrant, as well as varied, color palette.
