A large scale abstract citiscape painting, oil on canvas, by the Uruguayan artist Carlos Perez Franco (1929-2015).
Perez Franco exhibited throughout North and South America from the 1960s until earlier this century, and participated in many groundbreaking group and solo exhibitions. His paintings have been collected and exhibited by numerous museums and corporate and private collections of exceptional Latin American modern art, often alongside Picasso, Torres-Garcia and Barradas, the masters who first inspired him to paint. His work is heavily influenced by the early 20th century “Planismo” art movement of Uruguay, an offshoot of Cubism which utilized multiple planes of reference within a single composition, strongly evidenced here in this work. His paintings tell personal stories of his native land and are filled with the visual elements of magical realism and mystical symbolism, often depicting the disorder and psychic upheaval experienced during his country’s long years of military dictatorship.
