About the Item

Vividly painted in a palette of orange-red, pink, forest green and scarlet, this WPA-period painting of a group of circus performers relaxing between performances was executed by Dorothy Van Loan, one of America's most talented -- and under-appreciated -- Modernist painters. Here she shows two near-nude acrobats in the foreground, a nude female smoking a cigarette beyond, and other classic Circus elements in the distance, including an elephant, clown and circus tent. Van Loan studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and exhibited at the Carnegie Institute, Mint Museum of Art, Los Angeles Museum of Art, and the Washington Watercolor Club. Her art reminds us of the pioneering work of another woman artist of the period -- Marguerite Zorach. The painting is initialed in the lower lefthand corner of the painting, which is oil on canvas. Dimensions include frame; visible canvas is 13.5 inches high by 17.75 inches wide.
