About the Item

This small oil on panel is attributed to Adolphe Valette (1876–1942), the French painter who later became a leading figure of the Manchester School and mentor to L.S. Lowry. Dating from the late 19th century, this work depicts a tranquil rural scene: a shepherd with his flock under the shade of tall trees, bathed in soft atmospheric light. Though modest in scale, the painting reflects Valette’s early mastery of plein-air technique, blending lively brushwork with a subtle sense of depth. It offers a rare glimpse of the artist’s French period, in contrast to his later and more celebrated urban industrial landscapes. The panel is presented in a finely carved giltwood frame, richly decorated with laurel and acanthus motifs. The frame shows some small imperfections consistent with age, including minor cracks and areas of wear to the gilding, which add to its authentic antique character without detracting from its presentation. A refined and decorative work, appealing to collectors of French and Northern School Impressionism alike.
