About the Item
This rich tapestry of life in and around a quiet courtyard in North Africa -- with domes, towers and minarets in the distance, and a woman lingering on a balcony to one side -- was painted by Paul Théophile Robert, a Swiss artist. The scene seems to depict a European woman, fresh from the bath, being offered a tray of perfumes and ointments by one attendant, and lovely robes to wear by another. The artist was highly cosmopolitan, studying in France and Italy, traveling frequently between Switzerland, Germany and France, and hobnobbing with Amédée Ozenfant, Le Corbusier, André Lhote and Gino Severini. The painting is oil on Masonite, and is framed. The artist's signature is evident in the lower righthand corner. (Dimensions include frame.)
