About the Item
This painting executed in oil on a beveled a wooden panel, this work is a copy after the composition “The Palace Guard” by the 19th-century French painter Alexandre Gabriel Decamps. The original belongs to the artist’s most recognizable Orientalist and genre subjects, which were widely admired and frequently copied throughout the 19th century.
The painting depicts a solitary guard shown in profile, standing in a calm, almost statuesque pose. The figure rests on a long weapon, lending the scene a sense of stability and restrained dignity. He is dressed in an exotic historical costume, including a white shirt with softly modeled folds, red trousers, leather footwear, and a head covering with a plume. A blue drapery placed at the figure’s feet provides a cool color accent and adds depth to the composition. The dark, neutral background emphasizes the silhouette and enhances the intimate, focused character of the scene.
A signature is present in the lower portion of the painting; however, it is difficult to decipher and does not allow for a confident identification of the artist. The work should therefore be regarded as a 19th-century European copy or repetition after a well-known composition by Alexandre Gabriel Decamps.
The painting is housed in a richly decorated carved and gilded composition frame on a wooden base. The reverse retains the original panel construction and shows signs of age and use, consistent with the period.
