About the Item

Andrea Locatelli (Rome, 1693–1741) A Roman Landscape with Figures Oil on canvas This elegant landscape painting, populated with figures set amid the Roman countryside, is by Andrea Locatelli, one of the leading landscape painters active in Rome during the early 18th century. Locatelli was highly esteemed by the English Grand Tourists—the “Milordi”—whose appetite for classical and idealized views made his works especially sought after. Consequently, many of his paintings entered distinguished English collections, where they remain to this day. Locatelli’s refined compositions, suffused with a warm, atmospheric light and animated by pastoral figures, exemplify the poetic vision of the Roman Campagna celebrated in the 18th century. Bibliography: Andrea Busiri Vici, Andrea Locatelli, Ugo Bozzi Editore, Rome, 1974. Measurements are canvas only.
