Speidel was among a group of painters known as the 'Neue Sachlichkeit' (New Objectivity). This between the world wars group sought to reflect the deep soul of its subjects and often portrayed the anxiety and disillusionment that permeated the age.
Speidel continued after the war holding exhibitions and teaching at the Freie Universitat Berlin.
