About the Item
To our knowledge, this study is the only known image of this mural, created by John Garth to show an idealized Man at work and at play, all nude or semi-nude, and accompanied by animals ranging from collie and horse to squirrel and chipmunk. Clearly created to plan a large mural, this piece is executed in mixed media, including pencil, pen and gouache laid over a printed image. Garth was a giant among artists in San Francisco for many years, and served as Mural Director for the WPA Art Project there in the 1930s. He painted murals for the Sir Francis Drake Hotel and the University of California, among other clients, and also designed mosaic murals such as the famous "World Sources of Food" located in the Marina neighbourhood of San Francisco. At one point he kept a studio at the Fairmont Hotel Studios, at the rear side of the famous hotel, and at other points a studio at the Artists Building a few blocks away, at 535 Sacramento Street. This piece comes from the descendants of the artist.

John Garth
John Garth grew up in Topeka, Kansas and attended Washburn University, Art Institute of Chicago and graduated from Yale University in 1914. He studied at the Arts Student League and in Europe from 1914–15, including being in Berlin, working with Renoyitski and Conrad Fehrand. Garth taught at the Roberts college in Constantinople for eight months, returned briefly to Topeka and then was in Hawaii in 1916. He served in World War I, then settled in San Francisco, California. Garth temporarily was art director of the Pacific Railways Advertising Company and from 1920–35 conducted the Garth School of Art.
