About the Item
A large
fine antique early 19th century hand-painted
gilded Greek Orthodox icon, egg tempera on panel, circa 1800.
The icon with a central figural group of the Virgin
Jesus, the heavens above them with God
Jesus looking down, flanked with angels seated on clouds. The Virgin is surrounded by saints in gilded cartouches with Greek caligraphy, the Virgin also with a long ribbon with Greek caligraphy. The base with four panels; the two central panels with the true cross to the center held by a pair of saints. In each corner to the base is the patron Saint George, killing the dragon and to the right the patron Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki.
The icon is very finely painted in the Byzantine style, with egg tempera paint
gold leaf on a gessoed wood panel, the rear has a pair of (shponki) battens to keep the icon from warping.
Condition is very good, this very beautiful antique icon is ready to grace your space.
