About the Item
Antique Framed Oil Painting on Canvas by Jan Van Genesen (1887-1945) depicts a scene found throughout Europe's countryside, with a rutted dirt road winding through a forest with occasional clearings for homesteads and small farms. Van Genesen has chosen early fall for his composition, when colors are just emerging in preparation for winter. The positioning of the road as the centerpiece of the work invites the viewer into the scene, beckoning to pass alongside the cottage, perhaps even to stop for a visit. This Dutch-born painter studied in The Hague, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, and in Paris. He also painted seascapes in Blankenberge, where he ran a shop and also exhibited his work. He enjoyed spending part of the year near Spa in the Ardennes, where he produced paintings of springs, streams, and the Fens with undeniable talent. We can only imagine the influence that living through two World Wars had on his work.
