OLIVER CLARE
British, 1853-1927
Still-Life with Grapes, Gooseberries, Yellow Apples, Peaches and Strawberries
Oil on artist's panel signed lower right "Oliver Clare"
15 1/4" H x 2 1/2" D x 18 1/4" W [frame]
11 1/4" H x 14 1/4" W [panel]
A finely painted still-life by Oliver Clare, the very well-regarded Victorian painter of still-life scenes known for his complex arrangements of fruits in naturalistic settings. The present example is a brilliantly textured and detailed scene depicting a cluster of purple grapes front and center spilling over a collection of Yellow Apples, the grape leaves and vine intertwined in the background before two peaches. A trio of strawberries are situated in the front and a scattered collection of gooseberries shine with their translucent skins in the right corner. It is signed in the lower right corner and is housed in what is likely the first frame for it, a wonderful pierced giltwood example that is typical on his work.
Born to the still-life artist George Clare in 1853, Oliver Clare and his brother Vincent both pursued a very distinct and individual specialization in unusually precise, intricately detailed and finely finished still-life scenes, mostly of fruit and flowers. Together with his brother, Oliver studied under his father and developed heavily on the intricate textured stippling techniques of George Clare; he is generally considered to be the best painter from the Clare family. He exhibited extensively at the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists, showing no less than eighteen paintings there over the course of his career. While he spent most of his life in Birmingham, he spent the late 1870s and early 1880s living in London where exhibited between 1873 and 1883 at least two paintings the Royal Society of British Artists (Suffolk Street) and one at the Royal Academy. He further exhibited at the the Walker Art Gallery of Liverpool and the Manchester City Art Gallery.

Condition Report:
Surface has not been cleaned by our conservator. Presents with minor surface grime and several dark specks on the leaves and grapes and right edge that probably were old inpainting that have since discolored. A faint surface scratch extends from the grapes into the apples left of them. Relatively bright and clear, though it would benefit moderately by being cleaned. Frame with rubbing and relief wear, numerous cracks to the gesso and wood substrate, including some losses to the gesso.

Antique Oil Painting by Andrea Cherubini, Italian
Located in Shippensburg, PA
An exquisite interior scene depicting a mother hen as she roosts while her chicks peck about the room, four feeding on the grain in a simple white porcelain plate while several gather to drink from a pottery vessel filled with water. The interior suggests the location is perhaps the storeroom or root cellar with a shelf stacked with garlic and a covered vessel hanging on the wall over the hen. The work is signed in the lower left corner "A Cherubini 1867, Roma" and the reverse retains labels from the gallery of Schillay Fine Art, Inc. in New York and subsequently an inventory label for Faultless Starch Bonami Company. The work has been professionally conserved and remains in pristine condition. Born in Rome in 1833, Andrea Cherubini was primarily a landscape and seascape painter, preferring to capture views of Southern Italy. A typical example would include Drawing in the nets, Sorrento offered at Christies, London in January of 2013, ultimately achieving 4375 GBP. The Benezit notes a few of his scenes as particularly interesting, including Seascape (1883), Eight Views of Capri and Views of the Island of Ischia and Surroundings. [Source: Benezit] Artist listings and bibliography: E. Benezit Dictionary of Artists, Vol. III, Gründ, 2006, p. 901; this notes the sale of four paintings, each described "Hen and Chicks...

Antique English Painting “Lake Nemi, Italy”
1865
by John Wilson Carmichael
By Carmichael
Located in Shippensburg, PA
The present work is an interesting scene for a number of reasons, including importantly its time of execution in 1865. It was during a period of his retirement to Scarsborough following time spent in Italy, sketching the major lakes and landscapes in the northern part of the country. Likely executed in his studio using the preparatory sketches made of the area during these travels, the scene captures an idyllic view of Lake Nemi during sunset. It is rich in fall colors as light cascades through the haze of clouds and strikes the turning leaves of the trees, casting long shadows along the meadow grasses. The blue waters of Lake Nemi are cool and reflect the landscape bordering the shore. The focal point of the scene is a family of three that is taking the day to hike the local countryside, breaking along a rock to enjoy the lovely views.
The work is signed and dated 1865 in the lower right corner and the original frame retains a label on it from John Hay
Son, an art dealer, framer and gilder in John Wilson Carmichael...

Image size: 17.5 inches x 13.5 inches

A lovely still life painting of fruit by Oliver Clare. Apples, black grapes and plums can be seen together with a strawberry and gooseberries. The fruit is shown lying amongst foliage and trailing ivy on a woodland bank.
Oliver Clare was born in Birmingham in 1853, the son of the flower artist George Clare (1839-1890) and his wife Elizabeth Bowen. His brother Vincent Clare (1856-1917) also became an artist and both would have received tuition from their father who influenced their style and subject matter. At the age of 18 he enlisted as a soldier in the Kings Own regiment, but gave this up to become a full time artist. Like his father, Clare specialised in still life paintings, containing fruit and garden flowers, often on mossy banks.
Sometime after 1871, he moved to London where he married Emma Mary Webb...
