About the Item
Antique painting Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew, by northern European painter of the 17th century
Oil on canvas 100 x 150 cm
Painting based on a subject by Martin de Vos (1532-1603) also made famous by an original engraving in burin by Hendrick Goltzius (1559-1617) that was part of a series devoted to the "Martyrdom of the Apostles."
Flemish descent, therefore, for this beautiful canvas that is influenced by the all-Italian Mannerist taste adhered to by the two Flanders masters mentioned above, where research of anatomies, twists and movement are the main features. The scene is full of crammed characters, as if to emphasize the importance of the martyred apostle, whose attribute is the knife, with which he was flayed alive, personified by the large figure on the left side. On the right of the composition is the Persian king Astage, executioner of the saint, whose fall is symbolized by the broken statue in the background, prefigured as divine punishment.
