About the Item
Original antique oil on canvas painting titled “Percy Bysshe Shelley on the shore of Spezzia”. Presumed to be inspired by “Distress at sea” painting from 1843 by Henry Thomson.
This striking romantic-style work depicts a young figure seated on a rocky promontory overlooking a storm-tossed sea. The contemplative pose - bare feet dangling, hands clasped, and gaze turned ouwards - evokes a sense of yearning or introspection. The choice of muted tones with a few contrasting highlights lends emotional depth. A seagull glides overhead, reinforcing the maritime theme.
Rendered with careful attention to texture - especially in the fabric folds and rock surface - and unified with atmospheric lighting, the painting suggests allegorical or literary overtones rather than a pure portrait
The painting is estimated to be from around 1900 and is framed in a gold painted wooden frame. It is titled on the back of the frame and has several writings on the back.
It has several repairs in the canvas and cracks in the paint, but is overall in good vintage condition.
