About the Item

This finely executed Russian Orthodox icon depicts St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, one of the most venerated saints in Eastern Christianity. The image is housed beneath a meticulously hand-engraved silver oklad (riza), made of 84 zolotnik silver (.875 purity), a standard used in Imperial Russia. The piece dates from the late Imperial period, circa 1880–1917. St. Nicholas is shown in his traditional episcopal garments, offering a blessing with one hand and holding the Gospel Book in the other. Flanking the saint are miniature images of Christ and the Mother of God, presenting the symbols of episcopal authority, a detail rooted in Orthodox hagiography. Features: Subject: St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Material: 84 zolotnik silver (hallmarked) Technique: Hand-engraved and repoussé silver riza (oklad) with partial hand-painted icon underneath Language: Cyrillic inscription at the base identifying the saint Period: Late 19th to early 20th century (c. 1880–1917) Origin: Imperial Russia Condition: Good antique condition. The silver oklad exhibits crisp engraving and natural age patina with some minor wear present. Some visible wear and minor losses to the painted surface beneath, consistent with age and devotional use. Dimensions: Approx. 8.75 x 7 1/8 inches This is a well-preserved and authentic example of Russian ecclesiastical art from the twilight of the Romanov era—highly collectible and suitable for liturgical, private devotional, or decorative display.
