Anton Rausch (1882 Fladungen/Rhön – 1939 Munich) was a German painter who trained in Nuremberg and at the renowned Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. His artistic work was characterized by religious themes and landscapes, with significant influence from the German Renaissance masters Dürer (etchings) and Lucas Cranach. Starting with etchings and later in painting, he developed his own style, which is characterized by romanticized depictions, religious motifs, and pronounced light and shadow effects. His longing for his former home in the Rhön (which, according to tradition, he is said to have thought about at least ten times a day and more) was often reflected in his landscape paintings until the end of his life.
Rausch's most frequent motif was the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus, which earned him the popular title of “Madonna painter.”
Examples include the “Tegernsee Madonna” and works by the artist in the Lenbachhaus Museum in Munich and the Rhön Museum in Fladungen.
Condition appropriate for its age, with tension distortions in the canvas, craquelure in the paint layer, some flaking paint, and slightly yellowed varnish. See pictures.
The Rhönmuseum Fladungen has an extensive collection (including the artist's estate). After 15 years of renovation and reorientation, it reopened in March 2025.
