Archery Painting After John Hoppner (1758-1810).
A charming early 19th century oil on canvas portrait of a young boy in archery attire. The young boy stands at the center of the composition, legs crossed and relaxed, full-length. He wears a brown jacket with gold buttons, a high-collared white shirt, and ivory cream-colored trousers, which are fitted and elegant-typical of upper-class children's dress of the time. In his left hand, he holds a hat with a blue lining, while his right hand casually holds his longbow. To his left stands a wooden archery target propped on legs, with an arrow clearly hitting the bullseye, this suggesting the boy is a skilled accomplished archer. The background features a wooded glade with tall trees, rich foliage, and a soft, naturalistic sky with layered clouds and hints of sunset light.
This is a charming and genteel scene that reflects both childhood innocence and social standing. The focus on archery attire, formal pose, and elegant rendering, all point to the boy being from an upper-class family.
