About the Item

Ardath Coldwell (American, B.1913) "Red Shoes" original oil painting, circa 1960s Original oil on canvas by listed American artist Ardath Coldwell. A beautiful young woman wearing a blue dress and red shoes. Canvas dimensions 10" wide x 14" high. The frame measures 15.25" wide x 19.25" high. Signed in the lower right corner. Very good condition. Born in Portland, OR on Sept. 16, 1913. After attending high school in Salem, Coldwell moved to San Francisco in 1933. Enrolling at the CSFA, she studied under Ralph Stackpole and Constance Macky. She then obtained her art teacher's certificate at UC Berkeley and San Francisco State College. During 1939-41 she worked on sculpture projects for the WPA. Since her marriage to Bruce Lathrop in 1942, she has continued to live in San Francisco. She painted oils and sculpted in clay, wood and stone until 1945 and switched to watercolors. Exh: SFMA, 1938-1940s; GGIE, 1939; San Francisco Art Association, 1939 (prize). In: San Jose School District. This is a fine opportunity to acquire an original painting by Ardath Coldwell.
