About the Item

Highly decorative and visually stunning, these two paintings depict scenes with winged cherubs or putti, figures that were very common in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. These dynamic and evocative figures are characterized by their expressive staging. The word "putti" is the plural of "putto," meaning child. Dynamic compositions with soft lines and gentle colors. This pair of oil paintings belongs to the Art Nouveau period, is signed and dated 1922, and is in the Art Nouveau style. The artistic approach to the use of putti in artworks during the Modernist period was entirely different from that used in the Baroque. At this time, they were primarily used as decorative elements, always integrated into floral and plant designs. The putti are reinvented with a more ornamental and less heavy character, integrated into an ornamental pattern with an overall artistic narrative, such as a boiserie. The image of Cupid comes from the evolution of Cupid/Eros, which during the Renaissance transformed into putti. Cupid was the Roman god of love, son of Venus and Mars. In this pair of works within tondos adorned with flowers and ribbons, one depicts a pair of putti playing, and the other shows Cupid with a flame in his hand.
