Known as "Dean of the Cape Ann School," Frederick Mulhaupt was a native of Missouri. In 1922 he became a year round resident. Ten years later he purchased a studio on Rocky Neck. During the Depression, Mulhaupt was one of several local artists to participate in WPA art projects, he painted murals during this time still hang in Gloucester City Hall and the former High School on Dale
Known for his skillful depictions of the landscape and seascapes of Cape Ann, Massachusetts. His paintings, especially the working harbor scenes, captured the essence of the area a favorite spot of famous painters such as Winslow Homer and Fitz Hugh Lane.
He was born and raised in Rock Port, Missouri by prosperous German parents, and he had an early job as manager of a newspaper and magazine in Dodge City, Kansas. There he apprenticed to an itinerant painter, enrolled at the Kansas City School of Design, and then at the Art Institute of Chicago.
This painting is a charming picture from the popular oeuvre of the landscape artist. The passion for snowy countryside scene is apparent for this particular genre. Winter landscapes, and a Road stacked with snow is a particularly fine example, in which the artist has managed to capture the uniqueness of the cold light in contrast to the warmth of the barns and homes . Trees that flank the road, which have been depicted with almost photographic precision. Fine details include the Rocks and garden walls which poke through the snow blanket at the side of the track and a water pond.
This beautiful painting oil on canvas laid on board is nicely Framed and under the blue light (attached picture) it doesn’t show signs of repairs. As seen craquelures but overall good condition, you are welcome to send your specialist to see it in person. Wood frame some cracks losses as expected but overall good condition as well, the board with the top right corner damage, but not affecting the art itself. To mount in a drawing room , Library , living , bedroom , entryway on top of a console or chest of drawers.
