On May 16, 1872, one of the most important artists of his time was born at Lütke Gasse 4 in Münster: Bernhard Pankok (1872-1943) was one of the leading artisans of the first half of the 20th century and co-initiator of the Deutscher Werkbund. The work of the Münster native, who was academically trained as a painter, also encompasses most genres of arts and crafts, but he also created many complete works of art in the field of interior design.
Pankok took part in several world exhibitions with his interior designs: the oriel room at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition, which was furnished according to Pankok's designs, was even awarded the “Grand Prix”. In 1913, Pankok was appointed director of the Stuttgart School of Arts and Crafts, which he headed until his retirement in 1937. It was one of the first reform schools for the arts and crafts of a new kind.
