A beautiful late 19th to early 20th century devotional painting on wood depicting the Holy Mother by the French artist Xavier Sager. The serene portrait, rendered in warm tones and soft shading, shows the Virgin Mary with hands clasped in prayer and a gentle, contemplative expression. The artwork retains a charming, slightly time-worn surface that enhances its antique character.
The painting is set within an exceptionally fine Black Forest hand-carved wooden frame. The frame features deeply sculpted grapevines, leaves, and clusters of grapes, all intricately intertwined around the oval opening. Typical of traditional Black Forest craftsmanship, the carving displays impressive detail, depth, and naturalistic movement. The reverse shows old mounting boards and the original construction.
