About the Item

One of the great masterworks of Herbert von Reyl-Hanish and clearly inspired by Renaissance portraits which show a dignified personage with an idyllic landscape behind, this portrait of a young, blond youth in traditional lederhosen is striking and powerful. The intense, open gaze of the young man, and his fresh, ruddy countenance, contrast dramatically with the jagged peaks and cool colors of the sky and mountains behind him. Reyl-Hanisch is sometimes described as a Magic Realist, favoring mysterious scenes with mountains or castles that seem to impose themselves on any nearby animals or humans. Here, the aloof landscape is dominated, instead, by the warmth and confidence of the young man. The painting is oil on board; dimensions include frame.
